This afternoon, we went to see an 82 year-old lady in Kramatorsk who looks after abandoned cats. Her tiny Soviet-era apartment, crumbling and in an atrocious state of sanitation, smelled of cats and was indeed full of cats, as well as other paraphanalia. She was overwhelmingly happy to see us, and the huge sacks of cat food we had brought for her. But her problems with feeding the cats, some of whom were sick and she was taking to injecting with giant needles, were only the beginnings of her problems.
She had a swollen, infected finger. I gave her a strip of broad spectrum antibiotics I had to hand, and a colleague gave her a bandage. She was even more grateful.
The next problem was that the water tank in her toilet was overflowing, and water was cascading all over the floor of the apartment. The ball cock in her toilet had broken, and her overflowing toilet was threatening to flood the entire building. My colleague took to fixing the ball cock in the toilet with an old rusty plastic razor, while the rest of us cleared up the water several inches high on the floor with cloths, plastic dustpans and anything else that came to mind.

Finally, she thanked us a thousand times, and we were able to escape the clutches of her generosity. All in all we felt it had been a most successful afternoon: we had healed an injured elderly lady (or put her on the road to recovery); met her cats and seen her apartment, and brought food for them; and averted a potentially catastrophic flood of the building.
In wartime Ukraine, sometimes small things bring the greatest sense of self-appreciation. Today was one of those days.
